Abstract
Filho de Caetano Martins, carpinteiro, e de Maria das Dores de Sousa Pereira. Completou o ensino primário em Alhandra. O pai faleceu quando ele tinha sete anos. Com doze foi para Lisboa, para casa do seu tio materno, Lázaro Joaquim de Sousa Pereira, farmacêutico e proprietário da Farmácia Ultramarina, na Rua de São Paulo.
