Abstract/Resumo
When relating multinational enterprises to sustainable development, a key question is: How can agri-food MNE’s maximize their return on invested responsible capital by contributing to climate change issues? One view capable of having direct results in turnover for the company and generating positive results for the planet and the people who inhabit it, is through a sustainable development business strategy with great focus on ethical values. With this perspective as a focal point, it can be implemented by combining company capital with business ethics, in other words, a strategy implemented by the stakeholders’ theory of R. Edward Freeman perfectly aligned with Brundtland definition of sustainable development. The presenting research exposes an agri- food business strategy framework capable of achieving capital interests while reducing environmental impacts with less climate pollutants like pesticides and chemical fertilizers, most commonly used in plantations by intensive agriculture methods created in the second half of the twentieth century. Applying an ethical perspective it can overcome the most seen business vision, which is too much centred on itself. This paper will discuss contributions aimed at creating a better ethical business strategy striving to serve companies’ interests while reducing climate changes by enhancing stakeholder cooperation with suppliers. Using an abductive approach, we explore how stakeholders’ cooperation practices can emerge and evolve differently from company to company. As this cooperation progresses, different sustainable resources are acquired and actions are developed that lead to improved competences and results for companies. Ultimately, these competences and results are reflected in their product development.
