Abstract
The relationship between youth and social media raises particularly interesting debates about its role in a hybrid public sphere - where private and public are transmuted and
freedom and intolerance seem to be conflated, rendering debate and information more opaque and launching new demands regarding the need towards a democratic solidification
of our contemporary societies. This paper, based on an exploratory study on the growth and spread of hate speech on social media platforms among Azorean youth during the Covid19 pandemic, intends: (1) to address some of the most important theoretical debates around the concept of hate speech; (2) explore some of the characteristics related to the social and communicational context during Covid19 pandemic, and (3) identify some issues
concerning the use of social media by Azorean youth(s), while recognizing it as a multifaceted scientific object, especially in its way of acting and how it conferes meaning to action.
