Erasmus Mundus Joint Master on Coordinated Humanitarian Response, Health and Displacement (HumanResponse)
Local Coordinator
The Coordinated Humanitarian Response, Health and Displacement action-research project aims to implement an international master's degree, including European and African universities - HumanResponse Erasmus Mundus Joint Master Degree. The programme aims to provide a unique multidisciplinary programme in teaching and research about life-saving assistance and displacement in volatile contexts. The Erasmus Mundus project provides 60 scholarships for students, teacher mobility and lectures by Visiting Scholars from various countries.  In addition, it contributes to research with articles on innovative topics. The programme is jointly developed by Iscte-University Institute of Lisbon, Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), Makerere University (MU), University of Cape Verde (UniCV), University of Santiago (US), University of Athens (UAthens) and University of Rovuma (URovuma). The first semester is spent in Lisbon, Portugal, the second semester in Trondheim, Norway, and the third semester in Kampala, Uganda, before the students move to one of the seven partner institutions to work on their master’s thesis. In the fourth-semester students may collect dissertation data in humanitarian contexts with 23 institutions (associated partners) in Europe, Africa, the Middle East, South America or Asia. The curriculum is taught by both academics and practitioners, emphasizing problem-based learning and knowledge application opportunities in summer schools and internships.   HumanResponse tackles both research and teaching to address the pressing need for professionalisation of humanitarian workers through: fostering South-North collaboration and multi-stakeholder cooperation, strengthening localized leadership, and articulating theory and practice to navigate organizational complexity in humanitarian action.

Decision making of aspiring (re)migrants to and within the EU: the case of labour market-leading migrations from Asia
Researcher
Despite the global COVID-19 pandemic, Europe continues to be a major destination for transnational migrants, notably from Asia and Africa. The way in which this phenomenon has been unfolding underlines the urgent need to further conceptualise transnational migration by analysing the decision-making of aspiring (re)migrants. This scholarly enterprise is critically important as mainstream migration theories put more of a focus on broader social processes and dynamics, thereby overlooking the human aspects of migration. Basing itself on several migration theories in various disciplines, this proposal adopts a framework that humanises research on (non-)migration decision-making, i.e. highlighting its human aspects in three ways: engendering, decolonising and situating the analysis in temporal, psychological, relational and social contexts. As a case study, this research project will examine the decisionmaking of aspiring (re)migrants from selected Southeast and East Asian countries (China, Japan, Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam) to and within selected EU member countries (Belgium, the Czech Republic, Germany, Italy, Portugal, Finland). These migrants are oriented towards the EU labour markets where they are concentrated in ethnic niches. Employing qualitative and participatory research methodologies, the study will map the extent to which spatial mobility policies at the EU and national levels take into account aspiring (re)migrants’ behaviour, identify the micro- and meso-level drivers of (re)migration aspiration and/or intention and determine the temporality of aspiring (re)migrants’ decision-making. The results of this project will provide concrete information as to how individuals’ migration decisions change over time and on the specific stage at which mobility policies are more likely to play a role in shaping migration outcomes, which will enhance EU migration policies.   Research Team: Sofia Gaspar (CIES-Iscte)Renata Carone (CIES-Iscte)Olga Cojocaru (CIES-Iscte...

Young Mediators for inclusion
Researcher
This project promotes the participation of children/young people with autism in activities developed by community structures, on equal terms with their pairs, through the support of “young mediators for inclusion”. This will allow a progressive transformation of community structures, which will certainly prolong the project's impact in a sustainable way once the project is over. The YMI aims to: (i) design and test in three European countries an innovative / pilot methodology to include children / youth with autism in regular community structures (sports clubs, cultural and recreational associations, activities promoted by municipalities, etc. ), on an equal basis with other children through technical follow-up (mediators for inclusion) and through evaluation and necessary adaptations; ii) training “young mediators for inclusion” (facilitating agent that promotes the inclusion in articulation with the family and contexts); iii) training technicians and other staff of all community partners, in order to ensure the full participation of children/with autism; iv) design a European guide for the inclusion of children/youth with autism. To implement this innovative project has been established a consortium which includes 4 european associations (Inovar Autismo, Autismo Burgos, Autism Europe and Diversamente Onlus), a portuguese university (ISCTE-IUL) and a partner entity specializing in new technologies (Interactive media knowledge transfer intermediate).

The impact of immigration in the agricultural sector: the case of the Alentejo
Researcher
The migration of workers, both geographically and in terms of occupational activities related to agriculture, is one of the largest transformations in this sector in the 20th century. The Portuguese countryside has been characterized by a high rate of depopulation, as well as by the aging of its population. At the same time, agriculture, the main economic activity in rural areas, observed a substantial decline in terms of preponderance in the labour market and in the national economy. The combination of the lack of manpower and the high levels of competition has encouraged a process of restructuring of the agricultural sector, betting heavily on internalization. The integration of foreign workers and the expansion of the demand for manpower in the Portuguese agricultural sector constitute a paradox, given the rural decline observed in the 20th century. This paradox serves as the starting point for this research project, which has four main dimensions: 1. Identify the characteristics, intensity and determinants of the demand for foreign labour in the agricultural sector in the Alentejo region; 2. Analyze the sociological and demographic profile and the expectations of the foreign workers in the labour market of the agricultural sector in the Alentejo region
