CV Summary

I have a bachelor’s degree in Social Communication with a specialism in Journalism from the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG, Brazil), a masters in Sociology (University of Porto, Portugal) and I am a PhD candidate in Urban Studies (Nova University of Lisbon + ISCTE-IUL). I work as a PhD scholar (funded by the FCT, the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology, grant 2022.09498.BD) at the Centre for Research and Studies in Sociology (CIES) of ISCTE – Instituto Universitário de Lisboa (Portugal). I have attended modules in the Master's/PhD programme and short-term courses in Social Anthropology at the University of São Paulo, specialising in urban anthropology and urban ethnography.

Over the past five years my scientific research has focused on three main topics: 1) Migration and inequalities: privilege and precarious migration to cities. 2) Urban change: migration and city transformation; gentrification and urban night-time dynamics. 3) Global and urban inequalities: migrant trajectories and urban emplacement; urban marginalities. I am a co-organiser of the Meetings on Migratory Experiences (CIES, CRIA, and Observatório da Emigração) and CAU – Urban Anthropology Collective, an informal seminar group funded by representatives of CICS-Nova and CIES-ISCTE. I am also a member of the Anthropology of the City Study Group (GEAC) at the University of São Paulo and the Etno.URB – Urban Ethnography Network, spanning Lisbon, Porto, and Rio de Janeiro.

I have published four peer-reviewed papers in scientific journals, including Urban Studies (Q1 classification), and two book chapters, one of which was edited by Palgrave Macmillan. I have also reviewed a book chapter for Palgrave Macmillan, published one master's dissertation, and presented 14 oral papers— eight by invitation at academic events in universities and research network seminars, such as the ones organised by the Standing Committee Reflexivities in Migration Studies from IMISCOE (International Migration Research Network); and six peer-reviewed papers at international conferences, including those organised by ESA (European Sociological Association), EASA (European Association of Social Anthropologists), and RN37 Urban Sociology Network of the European Sociological Association. By the summer of 2025, I will be presenting two more peer-reviewed papers: one at the 22nd IMISCOE Annual Conference in Paris (1–4 July, online) and another at the ISA Forum from the International Sociological Association in Rabat, Morocco (6–11 July, on-site).

My path in the Social Sciences began after a well-established career as a journalist when I decided to delve deeper with a scientific approach to the subject I had dedicated myself to the most as a journalist: cities. Over nearly two decades, I have written for Brazilian publications including Galileu, Vida Simples, Folha de São Paulo and Vice.com, in addition to producing content for NGOs, local governments, and private companies. I worked for eight years at Abril (from 2006 to 2010) and Globo (2010 to 2014), two large publishing houses and media conglomerates in Latin America. I won the Globo Journalism Award (Society and Behaviour category) and was a finalist in the Health category. I was one of the Top Three Journalists and Bloggers nominated for the 2011 GreenBest Award, the largest Brazilian sustainability award at the time. I was a member of the commission for the first TEDx conference in Brazil, held in São Paulo in 2009, and of TEDx Amazônia in 2010. I also took part in the Brazilian commission for the COP15 UN Climate Summit in 2009, in Copenhagen.

Working areas: Communication Sciences/Journalism and Social Sciences with a focus on Urban Sociology and Urban Anthropology.
