Carlos Coutinho is an Assistant Professor and Director of the BSc in Informatics and Business Management at the university Iscte, an integrated researcher and member of the Scientific Committee at the ISTAR-Iscte research centre, and is the Director of R&D at the SME Caixa Mágica Software, S.A., in Lisbon, Portugal.

He obtained a PhD degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering in 2013 from Universidade Nova de Lisboa (NOVA-FCT). He works mainly in the areas of Computer Architectures, Operating Systems, and Cloud Computing at Iscte, where he also does research at ISTAR-Iscte, with interests in Cloud Architectures, Interoperability, Autonomous Agents and Negotiation, Adaptive Platforms and Systems Engineering, Blockchain, IoT, Service-Oriented Architectures (SOA), microservices, and Model-Driven Engineering (MDE) among others.

He has more than twenty years of experience in teaching IT areas at the Portuguese universities ISEL, ISCAL, ISGB and Iscte. He has published 5 (five) book chapters, 10 (ten) articles in indexed international scientific journals and 64 (sixty-four) articles in international conferences with peer-review, being part of the scientific committee of 6 (six) journals and 6 (six) annual international conferences. He was also part of the selection jury for 2 (two) positions of management positions in Public Administration. He successfully completed the supervision of 1 (one) PhD thesis and 30 (thirty) MSc dissertations. He is also the supervisor of 3 (three) more PhD theses and 8 (eight) more MSc dissertations currently underway. He was part of the jury of 6 (six) PhD theses viva voce, arguent in 22 (twenty-two) MSc defenses, and president of the jury in 6 (six) MSc defenses.

Since 2009, he holds the title and PMP® certification from the Project Management Institute, and a postgraduate degree in Project Management from Instituto Superior Bissaya-Barreto (ISBB) in Coimbra, Portugal. He has more than thirty years of experience in enterprise IT engineering, having worked in several areas of ICT consulting, Services, Public Administration and Aerospace industry, in several multinational projects for Caixa Mágica Software and in companies such as Alcatel, Siemens and Critical Software. He has participated as a researcher, and has been the coordinator of company research teams in numerous European Projects, such as TaRDIS (Horizon Europe), C2NET, vf-OS, and EFPF (H2020), TIMBUS (FP7), and Athena (FP6), and has also participated in numerous research projects for the European Space Agency (ESA), such as the OCDS projects, EGOS, SCOS-2000 and Galileo.
