Paulo Tormenta Pinto (Lisbon, 1970) began his teaching career in 1997 and is currently a Full Professor at Iscte, in the field of Architecture. His doctoral thesis, Architecture and Artifice – Cassiano Branco (1897–1970), has been published in three editions (Caleidoscópio, 2007, 2015 and 2020).
As a researcher, he has participated in and coordinated several projects related to architectural culture, notably as principal investigator of The Critical Monumentality of Álvaro Siza and The Grand Projects – Architectural and Urbanistic Operations after the 1998 Lisbon World Exposition, both funded by FCT.
He has held several positions within Iscte’s academic structure, including Director of the Department of Architecture and Urbanism and Deputy Director of the School of Technology and Architecture. He is currently Director of the Centre for Socioeconomic and Territorial Studies (DINÂMIA’CET-Iscte). In 2020, he served as sponsor for the award of the title of Doctor Honoris Causa to Nuno Portas at Iscte.
His work as an architect has been widely published and awarded, most recently receiving the FORMA Award 2022 and the Teotónio Pereira Award 2022. In 2022, he was a finalist in the FAD Awards, and his work was nominated for the Mies van der Rohe Award in the 2022 and 2024 editions. In 2023, he was distinguished with the Research and Sustainability Award (ex aequo), awarded by the Portuguese Order of Architects.
