Abstract
Um dos principais fundadores da sociologia e teórico incontornável, Émile Durkheim (1858–1917) nasceu em Épinal (Lorena) no seio de uma família judaica profundamente religiosa e austera. Destinado a continuar a tradição familiar do rabinado, cedo rompeu com a religião para se dedicar à filosofia ingressando, em 1879, naÉcole Normale Supérieure, onde teve como professores, entre outros, o filósofo neokantiano Émile Boutroux e os historiadores Gabriel Monod e Fustel de Coulanges. Este último, autor de A Cidade Antiga(1864), pela sua cuidadosa distinção entre história dos acontecimentose história das instituições e pela explicação da organização social através da religião, contribuirá para a importância que na reflexão durkheimiana desempenharão ambos os temas.
