Abstract/Resumo
Social, emotional, and behavioral skills are fundamental to a healthy and meaningful life, supporting us in emotion regulation, establishing and maintaining positive relationships, setting and pursuing goals, and engaging creatively with new stimuli. Though measures for its assessment in adults are still scarce. The Behavioral, Emotional, and Social Skills Inventory, with 192 items, measures 32 skills, divided into five domains, namely social engagement, cooperation, self-management, emotional resilience, and innovation. So far, the measure is available in English (original version), Chinese, German, Italian, and Spanish, and has consistently shown good psychometric properties. The BESSI in European Portuguese (BESSI-PT) has been translated through a rigorous process that involved several iterations and combined independent translators and back-translators, cultural adaptation, and expert analysis. Data collection is expected to end by May 2026, with the sample comprising around 800 participants in March. In this presentation, we will share the psychometric properties of the BESSI-PT (factorial validity, reliability, and reproducibility). Additionally, the 32 skills will be analysed in relation to mental and physical health symptoms and behaviours. The BESSI short forms (96, 45, 20 items) will also be tested, and the findings will be presented and discussed. It is therefore expected that a validated instrument for both screening and assessment will be made available to professionals in the field.
