Using a person-centred approach, we explored diversity in intimate experiences and behaviours among 439 individuals in consensual non-monogamous relationships from over 30 countries. A latent profile analysis based on relational and sexual outcomes with one partner (P1) identified three profiles: moderate satisfaction with high distress and low extradyadic desire (Profile 1); low satisfaction with high distress and high extradyadic desire (Profile 2); and high satisfaction with low distress and high extradyadic desire (Profile 3). Participants in Profiles 2 and 3 (vs. Profile 1) were more likely to report a polyamorous (vs. monogamous) configuration, longer relationship length, and non-monogamy consent and enactment (vs. consent without enactment) with P1. Participants in Profiles 2 and 3 (vs. Profile 1) were also more likely to have another partner (P2) and reported greater sexual satisfaction, lower sexual distress, and less frequent condom use with P2. Our findings offer a fresh perspective on the study of consensual non-monogamy by highlighting meaningful diversity in individuals’ experiences not fully captured by variable-centred approaches or self-identified relational labels.
