Civil Engagement in Social Work: Developing Global Models
Researcher
This project aims to examine the role of civil society in supporting vulnerable members of the community within the context of social welfare reform, neoliberal policy and new public management initiatives. Pressures of marketization, austerity and statutory intervention are challenging policies to reducing poverty, social inequality and social exclusion and promoting social cohesion and developing social capital. The project involves EU and associated countries that are undergoing significant social and economic change, namely England, Italy, Portugal, Spain and Turkey, whilst non EU countries, Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa are newly advanced economic development countries. The project will enhance the understanding and knowledge based models of global sustainable social welfare service delivery.

Combate à exclusão social entre populações de jovens sem-abrigo: uma investigação comparativa de trajectórias de vida e programas de reinserção para mulheres e homens jovens adultos de diversas condições étnicas e migratórias
Local Coordinator
This research project focuses particularly on groups of socially excluded youth – homeless young people and those at risk of homelessness - and promotes a dynamic understanding of their life-trajectories. It takes into account gender and ethnic minority affiliation and its policy outcomes and programme recommendations will apply across these groups of young people and those with low education qualifications, and poorer employment and social integration prospects. Moreover, it involves the active participation of young people as both subject and object involving participatory research methods to achieve relevant findings for the personal development of young people, their social integration and social cohesion. Levels of youth homelessness vary between European countries in relation to the patterns of support available to young people through their own economic efforts, social security transfers, family support and costs of entering local housing markets. All of these factors also vary within countries in relation to gender, ethnic minority group and migrant status. However, even Mediterranean societies, with strong family support systems, have begun to experience youth homelessness amongst local as well as migrant populations. In Northern Europe interventionist programmes have been developed designed to either: a) structure social work with hostel dwellers (the Netherlands ‘8 Step Programme) to promote reintegration and social inclusion within hostels for adult homeless and b) prevent youth homelessness among those most at risk (school excluded and runaways) through providing personal, education/employment development and family support through a multi-agency network (the UK ‘Safe Moves’ programme). CSEYHP is designed to test these programmes. CSEYP will: 1) Investigate the efficacy of these programmes with different homeless youth populations (male/female, ethnic minorities and migrant youth) in the Netherlands and UK and review the work of parallel programmes bei...

Students and their Trajectories in Higher Education: Success and Attrition, Factors and Processes, Fostering Best Practices
Researcher
This projects aims at identifying and analysing typical trajectories of success, failure and dropping-out among higher education students, relating them to structural and institutional parameters, and looking for explanatory factors and best practices. The scope of the project is nationwide and it spreads through the various Portuguese higher education subsystems. The analysis is carried out at three levels: structural, institutional and biographical, using statistical sources, surveys, institutional documents and in-depth interviews. The project is included in the programme “The Promotion of Educational Success and the Fight against Dropping-Out and Failure in Higher Education” of MCTES (Ministry of Science, Technology and Higher Education) and is supported by FCT (Foundation for Science and Technology). The research team is formed on the basis of a consortium between CIES-ISCTE and ISFLUP, and has also the cooperation of other higher education institutions and students’ unions.

Poverty, Social Classes and Ways of life: Portugal in The European Context
Global Coordinator
The project's objective is to discuss and present some new theoretical proposals and to operationalise key concepts based on micro-data from the European Community Households Panel (ECHP), with a view to making an innovative contribution to the social characterisation of contemporary Portugal in the European context. The intention is to cross the problematics of social classes and underclass and the distribution of incomes and poverty. It will combine traditional approaches taken by the analysis of income that is characteristic of economic science, with some core areas of sociological research, such as the structured systems of social inequalities. The presentation of the ways of life concept will complement and deepen in a qualitative perspective this objective.
