Labour relations in Portugal and the Lusophone World 1800-2000: continuity and change
Researcher
This project aims to quantify, examine and analyse labor relations in Portugal and the Lusophone World in the contemporary period, highlighting, in particular, the ways in which manpower and industrial relations have changed over time and adapted to social, economic and political shifts in Portugal and the Portuguese speaking world in the last two centuries. The Lusophone World is defined here broadly as the Portuguese speaking countries across the globe, and more strictly as the territories of the former Portuguese empire. The focus on the various Lusophone countries is a key element to this project as allow us to analyse these territories in comparative perspective, both due to the longevity of the Portuguese colonial system and the economic relations between these countries, which in most cases have lasted beyond independence (Brazil, 1822, India, 1961, Portuguese African colonies, 1975). This project will, in particular, help us to emphasize the depth and strength of these relationships, not only between the Lusophone countries, but also between the latter and their bordering regions and nations. By building and providing access to a global database on the development of labor relations and manpower in Portugal and the Lusophone world this project will fill an important gap in modern social sciences literature. This project will also make an significant contribution to better our understanding of the workforce composition, the evolution of its training and qualification, its productivity and the factors explaining changes in productivity, as well as its ability to innovate, and adapt to new forms of production, and the economic and social situation of the home societies. Following general European policy directives to democratize access to scientific knowledge and facilitate open access, all data collected by this project will also be made available online on the webpage of the Portuguese Institute of Contemporary History. Finally, by being associated to on-goin...

“MAGAZINE CONTACTO”: UMA PRODUÇÃO TELEVISIVA MULTISITUADA E A CONSTRUÇÃO DA IDENTIDADE NACIONAL PORTUGUESA NA DIÁSPORA
Principal Researcher
This project aims to analyse the contexts of multi-sited production of the TV show "Magazine Contacto", produced in different countries by members of the Portuguese diaspora and broadcasted by the Portuguese State TV channel. In this project, three local editions of the TV show will be analysed: the "Canadá Contacto", the "França Contacto" and the "Brasil Contacto". Scientifically the project is anchored in the Anthropology of Media sub-discipline, promoting an anthropological approach to a television production that is aimed at the "Portuguese communities" in the diaspora. The project articulates a discussion between a media production and the migrant's expressive cultural and identity constructions. From an "ethnography of production" point of view, it will be discussed the concerns regarding the creation of local and transnational contents and their implication in the construction of a Portuguese identity in the diaspora, as also the management and control of the media production from Portugal.
