ImAFUSA focuses on quantifying a variety of understudied factors influencing societal acceptance of UAM in urban, peri-urban and inter-urban areas, especially when these are deployed using U3 and U4 services. The Project will deliver an “Impact and capacity Assessment Framework for U-space Societal Acceptance” (ImAFUSA) to assist Local Authorities and other U-space stakeholders and users with the delivery of socially acceptable and beneficial UAM deployment in cities. The framework and its tools will provide insights into 3 major areas influencing societal acceptance: environmental impact (including noise, visual pollution and air quality), safety and socioeconomic impact (including affordability, accessibility, economic development, public space use and connectivity). In each area, innovative performance indicators will be described while mathematical formulas and algorithms will be developed to quantify them. Data on citizen noise perceptions, perceptions of visual pollution, safety perceptions and overall UAM acceptance will be collected during 3 immersive citizen experiences of UAM applications in the city of Athens, Greece. The usability of the developed indicators will be tested in a simulation environment simulating real future use cases with a varying volume and configuration of movements in U-space.
“We did it “wrong” with cars, we did it “wrong” with planes, let’s do it “right” with drones” is the motto behind this proposal. Imafusa will develop a tool that will allow cities and policy-makers assess the impacts of Urban Air Mobility (UAM) before it is implemented in populated urban areas and monitor the impacts of UAM, optimising constantly how it is deployed in order to reap its benefits without suffering its consequences.
Imafusa deals with the challenging topics of infrastructure, safety, noise, environmental impact, cost, economics, operations, social acceptance and public perception while addressing the most important societal acceptance factors. An “Impact and capacity Assessment Framework for U-space societal Acceptance” (ImAFUSA) will create new knowledge on societal factors and come up with new indicators that measure and monitor UAM impacts and capacity leading to a U-space widely and easily accepted by the public
ImAFUSA is driven by UAM technology potential, oriented towards citizen-centered U-space utilization and focused on the delivery of tools for UAM decision-makers to assess the impact of UAM in their regions and their associated U-space capacity. Unlike the experiences with past ground urban mobility innovations and the lack of proper preparation from the side of Local Authorities that were covered through EU funded projects after the technologies were available, the current landscape is presenting a unique opportunity for Europe to become a pioneer in the sustainable inclusion of UAM in societies catering for all environmental, societal and economic aspects. In this direction ImAFUSA is equipping Local Authorities, air navigation providers, network planners with one integrated framework for the UAM assessment and with 10 tools for the environmental, safety and societal assessment of UAM services.
