The presentation will address some conceptual and methodological concerns /issues. In the PITCH project, we aim to explore the intersections between petroculture and heritage cultures by conducting “a critical analysis of the impact of fossil fuels on past and present cultural heritage”. How can we analyze the intersections between petroculture and cultural heritage from a critical perspective? A more interesting challenge might be to think about petroculture through the lens of heritage, in other words considering how petroculture has both shaped and been shaped by heritage. By paying attention to the chemical structure, geological circumstances, historical settings and colonial histories, the cross-national comparison can provide a more nuanced approach to the relationships between petroculture and heritage in general and to the entanglement between national imaginaries and energy infrastructure in particular.
