BeWell-Iscte
The overall aim of this project is to promote the mental health and well-beingof students at Iscte-Instituto Universitário de Lisboa, based on the Stepped Care model, developed in the program for the promotion of mental health in higher education - ACCES Program. Focusing on a promotion and prevention approach, and adopting a logic of collective participation, the following specific objectives are identified: 1. Development of mental health promotion, prevention and adjustment activities (level 1 and 2), with a view to improving skills related to mental health literacy, mental resilience and stress management; 2. Strengthening psychotherapeutic and psychiatric responses for students with common mental disorders of mild to moderate severity (level 3), with a view to early intervention and avoiding more serious pathologies; 3. Strengthening the mechanisms for identifying situations of risk or serious mental illness and referring them to specialized health services (level 4 and 5); 4. Promoting the active participation of the student association in the development, implementation and evaluation of activities;5. Inclusion of students with specific educational needs and other vulnerable groups (1st year students, displaced students, national and international students, students benefiting from school social action, scholarship students from PALOP countries, women students, and LGBTQIA+ students), across the board in the activities developed.

kNOwing online HATE speech: knowledge + awareness = TacklingHate
Despite the Union’s effort to fight against online hate speech (OHS), several reports showed an increase in OHS during 2020-21. The current pandemic provided a context for increased scapegoating and stigmatization, and minority groups are disproportionally targets of hatred discourse. OHS is a persistent threat to the Union’s values and there is a need for more knowledge on its content, detection and countering, as highlighted in the current Call. Portugal, as other member states, has seen an escalation of hate speech against immigrants, racial/ethnic groups, and LGBTIQ communities.
However, there is no systematized knowledge nor tools designed to detect, monitor and prevent OHS against these communities. Our project aims at addressing this need, offering a comprehensive, participatory and culturally sensitive approach to analyse, detect, and counter, direct and indirect OHS in Portuguese language.

resilient@uni
Several studies have shown evidences of psychological suffering among the younger generations and in particular in university students. The context of the pandemia COVID-19 has generated many more challenges, with increased impacts on this group. The resilient@uni project brings together a group of psychologists from different specialty fields (e.g., social, educational and clinical psychology) to explore the mental and physical health of this population, identifying potential risk and protective factors, at different levels, from intra-individual variables to social contexts. These results are aimed to inform appropriate intervention programs and policies to tackle this issue.

Enquête Trans et Santé Sexuelle”, which is part of an international project : « Health and Citizenship among trans individuals : International comparisons"
Discrimination, social exclusion and stigma have a significant impact on the physical, psychological and social well-being of transgender people. This population has been identified as at greater risk for mental health problems, such as depression, anxiety, social phobia, substance abuse or eating disorders (Brian, Garofalo & Emerson, 2010; Gómez-Gil, Trilla, Salamero et al. 2009; Vocks, Stahn, Loenser & Tegen-bauer, 2009); with the highest rates of suicide and suicide attempts among other groups stigmatized on the basis of ethnic, cultural or religious origin, age, gender, sexual orientation and / or functional level (Magen & Shipherd, 2010; Nuttbrock et al. , 2010). In short, experiences of discrimination place significant barriers to the mental health and well-being of transgender people.
Recently, the legislation in Portugal has been changed with respect to the legal recognition of gender identity. There is evidence that recognition of gender identity plays a crucial role not only in social integration but also in personal acceptance (eg Couch, Pitts, Croy, et al. ., 2008; Pinto & Moleiro, 2015). Yet only a fraction of the transgender population has access to this recognition, and when it does, barriers to access to health services and other quality supports have not always been met (see Final Project Report funded by CIG - EEA Small Grants Scheme, by Moleiro & Pinto, 2016). Thus, on the one hand, there is still a void about the experiences of the diversity of people whose identities and gender expressions transgress or translate fluid and non-binary experiences of gender. On the other hand, research has revealed the need for information, awareness-raising and even training of different target groups on gender and gender identities.
This project aims to study this population and answer these questions, through the study of health and citizenship of Trans people in Portugal, in collaboration with INSERM (Professor Alain Giami) and cross-cul...
From minors to adulthood: integration and autonomy of unaccompanied minors
This project intends to characterize refugee unaccompanied minors in Portugal and to know the processes of transition for the majority, as well as to know the contexts of reception and reception, using to that effect the triangulation of methodologies (qualitative and quantitative) and informants (unaccompanied minors and stakeholders). The first study aims to characterize the contexts of reception and reception of unaccompanied minors in Portugal through various stakeholders, both directly related to the request for protection and reception, and those who are involved in the integration contexts in basic education and health systems. The second study aims to characterize unaccompanied minors and to know the processes of transition to adulthood, through self-biographical narratives, as a way of giving voice to minors / adults to approach their paths and experiences.
A child rights approach to combat bullying in detention and residential care settings
The CRAC - A child rights approach to combating bullying in detention and residential care settings for youth is a European project funded through the European Commission's Daphne Program, and aims to reduce the incidence and impact of peer violence in the context of Education Centres (CE). In Portugal, the project was developed by the partnership Par-Answers Social together with the CIS-IUL, with the support of the Directorate General of Reinsertion and Prison Services (DGRSP). At the European level, the partnership involved the University of Bologna in conjunction with Save the Children (Italy), with the support of the Italian Youth Justice Department and Bologna University (Coordinators), as well as counterparts from Bulgaria. Questionnaires were applied to youths and team members to evaluate the experiences and perceptions of bullying in this type of contexts in Portugal, Bulgaria and Italy, as well as coping strategies used by youth and institutional climate.
O projet...
